The DPF catalyst has an ability to reduce particulate matter (PM), hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxides (CO). The DPF catalyst is a monolithic type catalyst. Alternating passages in the catalyst have either their inlet or outlet blocked. This forces the exhaust gasses to flow through the walls of the passages (see illustration above). Due to the flow of the exhaust gasses through micro-cavities in the passage walls, it is called a "wall flow" type converter.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

In order to detect abnormality in the DPF (*1) catalytic converter, the ECM monitors an exhaust gas temperature as well as a differential pressure of the exhaust gas. For monitoring the differential pressure, the ECM compares the up-and downstream pressure of the DPF catalytic converter. If the difference between the pressure is large, the ECM determines that the DPF has become contaminated or deteriorated, and illuminates the MIL.
Furthermore, the ECM monitors an increase in the exhaust gas temperature while the exhaust fuel addition injector adds fuel under DPF catalyst regeneration. The exhaust gas temperature during the DPF catalyst regeneration normally rises from approximately 300°C (572°F) to approximately 600°C (1112°F) or higher. If the temperature does not rise even if a certain period of time has elapsed, the ECM interprets this as malfunction of the DPF and illuminates the MIL.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

  1. After replacing the ECM, the new ECM needs registration (See page Нажмите здесь) and initialization (See page Нажмите здесь).
  2. After replacing an injector, the ECM needs registration (See page Нажмите здесь).
  3. After replacing the DPF catalyst, clear the thermal deterioration data stored in the ECM.

УКАЗАНИЕ:
  1. If a difference in pressure (DPF Differential Pressure Sensor) does not occur as the engine speed is increased, the DPF catalytic converter may be malfunctioning.
  2. Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

1.CHECK CATALYST RECORD OF DPNR THERMAL DETERIORATION
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch on (IG).

  1. Turn the tester on.

  1. Enter the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / DPNR Catalyst Deteriorate.

    OK:
    Normal

  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Read the DTCs.

3.CHECK BLOCKAGE OF VACUUM HOSE AND TRANSMITTING PIPE

Be careful of being burned by exhaust gases during the following inspection.



  1. Disconnect the vacuum hose (both upstream and downstream) on the differential pressure sensor side.

  1. Start the engine.

  1. Check if there is exhaust gas pulsations from both vacuum hoses while the engine is idling.

    OK:
    There is exhaust gas pulsations.

4.CHECK FOR EXHAUST GAS LEAKS
  1. Check that there is no exhaust gas leak in the exhaust system components and differential pressure sensor vacuum hoses.

5.READ VALUE OF DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch on (IG).

  1. Turn the tester on.

  1. Start the engine.

  1. Enter the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Differential Pressure FB and MAF.

  1. Check the differential pressure.

    Result:

    УКАЗАНИЕ:
    1. If the differential pressure is more than a value that the intake air amount (MAF: g/sec) is multiplied by 0.31, DTC P2002 (Particulate Trap Efficiency Below Threshold [Bank 1]) will be present.
    2. The standards for the differential pressure sensor are as follows:

6.READ VALUE OF EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch on (IG).

  1. Turn the tester on.

  1. Start the engine.

  1. Enter the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Initial Exhaust Temperature (In) and Initial Exhaust Temperature (Out).

  1. Check that exhaust gas temperature is within the specification below.

  1. Drive the vehicle.

  1. Enter the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Active the DPNR Rejuvenate (PM).

  1. Check that exhaust gas temperature increases after switching the DPNR Rejuvenate (PM) from OFF to ON.

    OK:
    The exhaust gas temperature increases by 100°C or more.

  1. Remove the exhaust fuel addition injector.

  1. Attach the exhaust fuel addition injector to a nozzle tester.

  1. Apply a pressure of 0.29 MPa (3.0 kgf/cm2, 42 psi) to the nozzle tester.

  1. Connect SST (wire) to the exhaust fuel addition injector.

      25 cm3 (1.5 cu.in.)

    2. The above is a reference value, thus, your reading may differ from this value depending on the measuring conditions, etc.
    3. Check that the nozzle of the exhaust fuel addition injector is not clogged.

  1. Reinstall the exhaust fuel addition injector.

  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Start the engine and warm it up.

  1. Turn the tester on.

  1. Enter the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List.

  1. Select the following menu items in order and read the values.

    *1: The air conditioner switch and all accessory switches should be OFF with a fully warmed-up engine.
    *2: This value is indicated when the ambient temperature is 25°C (77°F) and the atmospheric pressure is 101 kPa (758 mmHg, 29.83 in.Hg), and the stable boost pressure is maintained for approximately 10 seconds.
    *3: When the mass air flow meter malfunctions, the MAF output may deviate from the standard (referential) range when the engine idles and is accelerated from 3000 to 4000 rpm with full throttle acceleration.
    *4: Fully depress the accelerator pedal with the vehicle creeping at idle speed in 2nd gear.
